Over the last 16 years since we have been actively promoting UCMAS worldwide, it has come to our notice that some schools have adopted UCMAS as a part of their mandatory school curriculum whereas many schools still prefer to offer the program as an optional 'after-school' product. What do you think should be our approach to ensure that schools within our territories understand the importance of this skill and agree to offer it as a part of the curriculum?

As a parent of a child in the Ontario school system, I must say that it is definitely disappointing to see the standard of Mathematics being taught in our schools today. A lot of children are "afraid" of Math because they do not recieve a sound foundation at a young age.
Being brought up under a British Education system, the differences are astounding.
I truly believe a Mental Math program can provide a good foundation and provide children with confidence and not scaring them off.
YES, schools can benefit by offering such mental abacus training program.
In Canada, offering the program through public school can be a longer term goal, with a short term objective of creating awareness for the program within schools in our communities. As for private schools including Montessori (KG/elementary) schools, because they have greater autonomy and flexibility in setting the school curriculum, they can more readily integrate a bundled UCMAS offer in their program. In a competitive private school market, offering an innovative and beneficial program such as UCMAS can provide value-added to the parents and possibly an additional revenue stream for the school.
The approach can be to combine creating greater market awareness for the program especially with educators, with directly approaching private schools in our communities, starting with ones where we have UCMAS students or existing contacts through our personal and professional network.
