Like any other skill that requires practice, UCMAS Mental Arithmetic program also requires systemic and disciplined approach. Completing home assignments, religiously following a strict daily homework routine, etc. helps build the childs' competence. And...15 minutes of practice for the rest 6 days is not equal to 90 minutes of practice prior to coming for the UCMAS weekly class.
To add to the previous comment, I would like to makle a analogy to the eating habit. Can you force a child to eat the entire food for the whole week so that if he/ she does not eat for the next 6 days it should be OK? Can an athlete practice hours before a competition and get away with a medal if he or she has not been religiosly practicing for the competition. Like exercise is for body, UCMAS is for the brain.
As a veteran teacher of the program, it is easy to differentiate students who practise daily and those who do not. UCMAS is not a gimmicky math method that involves teaching arithmetic tricks like some methods currently out there. It is a life skill and like any other life skill, practise and repetition are essential for the connections in the brain to be made and strengthened. The possibilities are endless. Parents need to stress to their kids that hardwork is the key to success in anything in life. UCMAS Rocks!
The UCMAS mental abacus technique has demonstrated that with proper practise, extreme concentration power can be achieved. I am a parent in Gujarat where the research was conducted on my 6 year old child and i was amazed to find that my son could do mental calculations while listening to a story via head phones, repeating the same story word by word instantaneously, and tapping with both the hands on the table. Imagine the concentration level that this technique generated! Like someone has mentioned, UCMAS truly rocks!
